Nominated for the RONE AWARD
After refusing him once, heiress Miss Selina Wakefield accepts Giles Devereux, Earl of Halcrow’s, offer of marriage, against her better instincts. The handsome earl confesses that he needs to marry into money to save his crumbling estate, Halcrow Hall, and produce an heir.
Giles is the most interesting and fascinating man Selina knows. But he is also the most secretive. He has resigned his commission in the army while England is at war, and members of the ton cut him.
Because of the earl’s rakish reputation, Selina fears she may be leaving her calm, organized life for one of disorder and heartbreak. But she never expects what lies ahead.
First published as Love and War, a short story, but has been extensively rewritten.

At the Earl Convenience edition by Maggi Andersen Romance eBooks

Selina marries Giles in haste inexplicably drawn to the handsome, mysterious Earl despite his clear need for a wife with money. When her husband vanishes without explanation she carries on and covers for him refusing to believe the worst of him despite her worries. Selina already has a calm sensible character which evolves beautifully as she meets increasing challenges. I enjoyed each of her victories as she carried on even though she received little acknowledgement for her accomplishments. Ultimately Selina and Giles' HEA was all the sweeter as they learned to trust each other more deeply and lovingly. I recommend this book.

At the Earl Convenience edition by Maggi Andersen Romance eBooks Reviews

I've no idea how I found this short story but I have to say because I had few expectations, I really enjoyed it. I love a good old marriage of convenience story. The h marries the H after he asks the second time, knowing that he's marrying her for her fortune. The day they get married the H disappears without a trace and returns months later. It had the potential to be very miserable but the author did a good job with the characters and this was a pleasant read.
The story began well but left me hanging for long periods of time. No time for true romance to materialize as Giles would leave before then. Mystery was shallow and intrigue non existent.
What a story! Selena has no idea what she is in store for when she agrees to marry Giles as convenience. On their wedding night he disappears and comes back some weeks later I'll and bruised. Where he had gone she has no clue.

When she returns from a visit with her sister, he is gone again and she decides to search for him. What she comes up with does not sit well with her, all avenues point to him being a spy, but she cannot believe it. Is it possible that the man she has fallen hopelessly in love with, could be a spy?
This is the first book of Maggie Anderson's that I've read. I know this was a "fleshed out" novella, so I hope her regular novels are better. It's hard to describe what it is that makes the difference between amateur writing and professional writing but I know how I feel when I read it.
Pro I know what is going on and how the characters feel without being told. Dialogue takes up the bulk of the pages.
Amateur long passages describing the characters inner workings and the events.
The author did a wonderful job developing the two main characters and showing their growth, even in this shorter length book. I loved how she focused on both Giles and Selina, and I really felt that their transformations were believable, particularly in his case. They were well rounded, sympathetic characters, and I felt their relationship grow as the book went on, through many plot twists. To me the test of a good book is whether the characters stand out to you and whether you miss them when you are through--they do, and I do. Finally, I loved the descriptions of the house, the renovations and how it transformed. A nice read, would recommend.
As a novella it was just ok. I haven’t read anything by this author before, and based on others reviews was looking forward to reading it.

As far as the storyline or plot goes, it started off good and had potential. I thought the heroine, Selina’s character, was better written and developed. But the Hero, Giles was left lacking. He was barely in the novel and therefore was left underdeveloped. Since he was absent for long periods of time there wasn’t time for any relationship or romance to grow between them. There was also a lack of communication between them; not only from being apart, but when they were together it was surface level conversations. The story was also slow at parts, than fast, slow, fast…

The writing was also very amateur, it just felt off. I know the author is tooted as an “ Best Seller”, but there were lots typos, spelling errors, and grammatical errors. She needs to hire a really good editor to clean it up a bit. One that stood out from the beginning is Selina’s best friend, her name is Elsbeth, but often written incorrectly as Elspeth. There are also sentences that are short and make no sense, example ‘He stood up. Than bent over.’, that exact line wasn’t in the book, but similar “sentences” were. A few other examples “Aren’t they my breeches?”, “…to accept to his invasion”. The author didn’t develop the characters well, instead of learning about them as the story built, we are told in long paragraphs how they are, I didn’t feel connected to the characters, events, or places, the info was thrown at me. Also the author doesn’t have great background information on the times, it is written in modern dialect and slang, and not at how it would have been in 1812. If the story is written well enough, I can usually overlook the modern undertones, here I could not, it was all just implausible.

They aren’t able to consummate the marriage until nearly the end of the book. I know another reviewer said it wasn’t a “clean” read, and she didn’t like the way it was so descriptive. But to me it was a lot of build up to a lack luster event. If you are going to include that material in your story, and be descriptive, at least make it good. To me it was rather boring and I skimmed over most of it.

Overall the storyline had potential, I think if it was written a little more fully, maybe actual novel length instead of a novella, and with a good editor, it could have been 4 or 5 stars. As is, I would not recommend.
Selina Wakefield first refused Giles Devereux the Earl of Halcrow marriage proposal. He did not hide that he had to marry for money.he had been at war but was now home to stay. She finally agreed to marry him as she cared for him but did not want him to know. They married in Bath and had stopped at an inn for their wedding night. She knew Giles planned on consummating the marriage .He was with her one minute then disappeared the next leaving her abandoned . They spent a lot of time apart till late in the book. You will have to read why this happened would ruin the story if I told you. She was strong she spent her time restoring his neglected home.while he was away. It was a short story but a good one.
